Attraction Introduction

Tanhualin, located in the northeast corner of old Wuchang, stretches about 1,200 meters from Zhongshan Road in the east to Desheng Bridge in the west. It gradually formed as an old street starting from the fourth year of the Hongwu era in the Ming Dynasty (1371). After the opening of Hankou Port in 1861, the area around Tanhualin gradually developed a mixed Chinese and foreign character, resulting in a diverse range of architectural styles.

Today, it has almost become the top cultural and artistic street in Wuhan, encapsulating the city’s artistic spirit. Taking photos, strolling around, or enjoying a coffee-scented afternoon are all things artsy visitors love to do here. As you touch the weathered old buildings along the street, you’ll find that Tanhualin offers more than just artistry—every brick and tile carries historical memories of old Wuhan. Countless historic structures await your exploration, including Wuhan No. 14 Middle School founded in 1903, Tanhualin Primary School with a 68-year history, the Western-style mission hospital Renji Hospital introduced in 1861, Chongzhen Church, and the former residence of Qian Jibo, father of Qian Zhongshu.

Special Tips

1. Many of the old buildings in Tanhualin and the surrounding area are still residential. When visiting, try not to disturb the daily lives of local residents. If you wish to take photos of them, it’s best to ask for permission first.

2. Many of the old buildings are currently not open to the public. Do not enter without permission—enjoying the exterior of these impressive structures is still a wonderful experience.
