The cherry blossoms at Wuhan University have a long history and a complex historical background. Most people don’t know much about the origin of the cherry blossoms at Wuhan University, often only aware that they were planted by Japanese soldiers. Therefore, although the beautiful blossoms paint the campus and offer aesthetic pleasure, they also bring some “controversy.” Some believe the cherry blossoms symbolize national humiliation, while others say not to overcomplicate their meaning. Some claim Wuhan University is beautiful because of the cherry blossoms; others say the cherry blossoms are charming because of Wuhan University.

On the Wuhan University campus, in addition to the Cherry Blossom Garden, cherry blossoms can also be enjoyed near the Fourth Teaching Building, Kunpeng Square, the Humanities Science Building, the Administration Building, the University Hospital, as well as the main teaching building of the Engineering Campus, the Star Lake of the Information Campus, and the Medical Campus. However, the best spot to admire the blossoms is undoubtedly the “Cherry Blossom Garden,” the area directly named after the cherry blossoms. The Cherry Blossom Garden mainly features Yoshino cherry trees and includes a collection of six varieties and over ten premium types of cherry blossoms, such as early blooming, late blooming, and weeping cherry. The blossoms come in rich and vibrant colors, with diverse branches and trunks, and varying flowering periods. When winter fades and plum blossoms wither, the early cherry blossoms bloom first, followed by Yoshino cherries, weeping cherries, and late bloomers. In full bloom, the Cherry Blossom Garden resembles an ocean of flowers, attracting thousands of visitors who come to admire the spectacle, enchanted and enthralled—capturing the essence of “if you want to see cherry blossoms in March, go to Wuhan University.”
