Hubei Institute of Fine Arts is the only multidisciplinary and multi-level higher art institution in Central China. The school was originally founded as Wuchang Art School in 1920, later renamed “Private Wuchang Academy of Art” (abbreviated as Wuchang Art Academy). As one of the earliest art colleges established in China, our institute is an important birthplace of modern and contemporary higher art education in China. Over its more than 90 years of history, it has consistently upheld the academic spirit of “inclusiveness” and the teaching philosophy of “compatibility and interaction,” cultivating generations of outstanding talents who are “virtuous, dedicated, proactive, and aesthetically minded” in service to society, making unique contributions to the development of China’s art industry.

Currently, the school has two campuses—Canglongdao and Tanzhonglin—covering an area of over 700 acres, with more than 8,000 students enrolled at all educational levels.

The school comprises 12 departments, including the Chinese Painting Department, Oil Painting Department, Printmaking Department, Mural and Mixed Media Painting Department, Sculpture Department, Design Department, Fashion Art Design Department, Environmental Art Design Department, Industrial Design Department, Watercolor Painting Department, Art History Department, and Animation College, as well as the Visual Arts Foundation Department, General Education Department, Marxist Theory Department, and the College of Continuing Education and Training.

The school currently offers three first-level master's degree programs in Fine Arts, Design, and Art Theory, as well as 21 undergraduate majors across 33 specializations, including Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Painting, Public Art, Sculpture, Visual Communication Design, Photography, Film and Television Photography and Production, Environmental Design, Landscape Architecture, Fashion and Apparel Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Animation, Digital Media Art, Theatre and Film Art Design, Art History, Art Design, Fine Arts, Art Education, and Cultural Industry Management—all of which confer bachelor's degrees. In 2010, the school signed joint doctoral training agreements with other universities, forming a new framework for high-level art talent cultivation in Central China.

As one of the first 32 pilot institutions for the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in China, the school currently has 10 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, 9 middle-aged and young experts with outstanding provincial contributions, 12 individuals enjoying special provincial government allowances, 2 candidates from the second tier of the Hubei Provincial New Century High-Level Talents Project, 1 Chu Tian Scholar chair professor, and 33 guest (adjunct) professors. It also houses four provincial-level research centers: the Hubei Modern Public Visual Art Design Research Center, IFA Fashion Art Research Center, Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, and Chu Art and Pre-Qin Southern China Art Form Research Center, along with nine affiliated institutes. At the undergraduate level, the school has established three Ministry of Education Featured Programs, two National Quality Courses, one National Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone, one Ministry of Education “Professional Reform Pilot Project,” one National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, one National Off-Campus Practice Education Base Project, and two National Quality Resource Sharing Course Projects. Additionally, there are 33 provincial-level “Quality Engineering” and “Undergraduate Teaching Engineering” projects in Hubei Province. Moreover, the Tanzhonglin Art District has been designated as an “Hubei Provincial Cultural Industry Demonstration Base.”
