The Hubei Academy of Fine Arts currently has a total of 105 staff members, including 54 professional fine arts creators, among whom 45 are first-class artists. The current director is Comrade Dong Jining, a renowned landscape painter. The academy currently has seven internal departments: the Office (Political Division), the Creative Research Department, the Art Development Department, the Art Museum, the Chinese Painting Creative Research Studio, the Oil Painting and Watercolor Creative Research Studio, and the Sculpture Creative Research Studio. It offers a full range of specialties, including Chinese painting, oil painting, sculpture, watercolor (gouache), lacquer painting, calligraphy and seal carving, and art theory.

The Chinese Painting Creative Studio is the largest and most creatively robust professional studio in the academy. Since its establishment, it has seen rapid development. A number of renowned painters, such as Zhou Shaohua, Tang Wenxuan, Feng Jinsong, Wei Yang, Shao Jinzhi (theory), Chen Liyan, Nie Ganyin, Liu Wenchen, Liao Liangui, Shi Jiangcheng, Wu Liangfa, have successively worked here on creative research. The current team includes middle-aged and young artists such as Dong Jining, Xie Xiaohong, Peng Taiwu, Xu Xiaohua, Lei Wei, Wang Dan, Liu Xiulin, Hao Shiming, and He Bo. The Chinese Painting Creative Studio is committed to inheriting and developing the outstanding traditions of national painting, advocating innovation, and emphasizing professional theoretical study and research. It has won multiple awards at exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Culture and the China Artists Association; published numerous collections of works and monographs; frequently featured artworks and theoretical articles in domestic and international professional publications; and organized multiple solo and joint exhibitions abroad, as well as academic exchanges and public welfare activities, exerting significant influence both domestically and internationally. The current director of the Chinese Painting Creative Studio is Peng Taiwu.

The Oil Painting and Watercolor Creative Studio has been home to many renowned artists engaged in creative research, such as Tang Xiauhe, Su Xiaobo (Germany), Jiang Xiaosong (Canada), Li Xiaohong (Canada), Zheng Changzhong, Lei Binong, Cui Bingliang, Peng Shulin, Xu Huiling, Zhang Hanrong, Chen Junfan, Wu Zhenquan, Cai Di’an, Dong Li, Wei Zhengqi, and Mai Baosen, who have created a large number of outstanding works that have had a major impact nationwide. The current team includes middle-aged and young artists such as Zhang Man, Li Jin, Ouyang Zhi, Xu Hao, Liu Hongling, and Li Nan. They carry forward the rigorous scholarship and pioneering spirit of the older generation of artists, keep pace with the times, and advocate innovation. Their oil paintings, watercolors, murals, and lacquer paintings have won multiple national awards and been published in professional publications both at home and abroad. They also actively participate in international art exhibitions and exchanges. The current director of the Oil Painting and Watercolor Creative Studio is Zhang Man.

The Sculpture Creative Studio is one of the first four provincial-level sculpture creative research institutions established in China. Its predecessor was the Sculpture Teaching and Research Section of the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts. Sculptors who have worked here include Wang Fuzhen, Zhang Manhan, Zhu Dacheng, Zha Shiming, Huang Yali, Li Jianshen, and Fu Zhongwang. The current team includes sculptors such as Li Sanhan, Wang Sheng, Guo Xue, Li Jiang, Shi Jinsong, An Weiqiu, and Li Pengcheng. Over the past 50 years, three generations of artists—veterans, mid-career professionals, and young talents—have passed on the torch, creating many sculptures with social impact and academic value. They also actively engage in the design and production of sculpture and environmental art, forming a vibrant community of sculptors. The current director of the Sculpture Creative Studio is Guo Xue.
