Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery
Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a national AAA-level tourist attraction, a classic red tourism destination, a patriotic education base, and a national defense education base.
Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is located at No. 1 Yangjialing, Xingyanyi Road Community, Chengguan Town, Yun County, Shiyan City.
Yun County is located in northwestern Hubei Province, spanning both the northern and southern banks of the Han River, with a strategically important terrain that has long been a contested military area. During the New Democratic Revolution period, under the leadership of the Party, more than 40,000 people from Yunyang joined the army and fought in battles, while over 2,000 sacrificed their lives heroically. Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was first built in 1950 by the former Yun County Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Yunyang Special Administrative Region Office, and the Yunyang Military Sub-district to commemorate the martyrs who died liberating Yunyang. The original site was located on Canglang Mountain (also known as Tiger Mountain) in the old town of Yun County. It was completed on July 1, 1951, covering an area of 25 mu, with a construction area of 10 mu, stretching 400 meters from east to west and 125 meters from north to south. The main structure included a three-story hexagonal main pavilion with a brick-and-wood structure, each level adorned with marble steles inscribed with eulogies and the names of the martyrs. There were also auxiliary pavilions on the north and south sides, symmetrically placed and engraved with the names of the martyrs. In front of the main pavilion stood an exquisitely carved antique-style memorial archway inscribed with the six large characters “Yunyang Martyrs’ Cemetery.” On the screen wall in front of the main pavilion were calligraphy-style words from Mao Zedong: “Live a great life, die a glorious death.” The cemetery was shaded by green trees and blooming flowers. At the top of the main pavilion stood a full-body statue of a People’s Liberation Army soldier in green military uniform, holding a gun and gazing into the distance. In 1978, due to the rising water level of the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the terrain of the southern stele area sank. In 1979, after approval from the People’s Government of Hubei Province, the cemetery was relocated to Yangjialing in the northeastern part of the new town. The new Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is built along the mountain and covers an area of over 100 mu. Its current main structures include the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, the Monument Pavilion, the Yang Xianzhen Memorial Pavilion, the Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall, the Video Hall, and four antique-style corner pavilions on the east and west sides. Supporting structures include the Eagle-Watching Garden and the Martyrs’ Cemetery Protective Wall. The monument is made of reinforced concrete bricks and stones, slightly shaped like a regular square frustum, with a height of 24.8 meters. The stone tablet is engraved with the names of 1,609 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during various revolutionary periods. The hall also houses 23 plaques donated by the CPC Yunyang Regional Committee, the Yunyang Administrative Office, the Yunyang Military Sub-district, the directly affiliated agencies of the Yunyang Regional Government, the CPC Yun County Committee, the Yun County People’s Government, and various mass organizations. In the antique-style pavilion corridor, the names of Shi Yang, a leader of the February 7th Strike, and He Shichang, a Communist Party member from Yun County, organizer of the Baise Uprising, and director of the political department of the 8th Red Army, are engraved. The 29 exhibition boards in the display room detail the revolutionary struggle histories of counties and cities such as Danjiangkou, Yun County, Yunxi, Fang County, Zhushan, and Zhuxi. It is the most comprehensive and wide-ranging revolutionary history museum in Shiyan City in terms of historical materials and coverage.
In 1985, Yunyang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Yun County by the People’s Government of Yun County. In 1988, it was approved as a key martyrs’ memorial building protection unit in Hubei Province by the People’s Government of Hubei Province. In March 1995, it was announced as a Hubei Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the People’s Government of Hubei Province.
