Tianhe Site

The Tianhe Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Henan Province.

The Tianhe Site is located approximately 1 kilometer northeast of Shangtianhe Village, Mazaizhen, Erqi District, Zhengzhou City, on a terrace along the southern bank of the Shengshuiyu River, a tributary of the Jialu River. It is a newly discovered Paleolithic site. The site area is now part of the ecological conservation forest zone of the Zhengzhou Jian'gang Reservoir and is relatively well-preserved. The site has a wide distribution, large area, thick cultural deposits, and rich remains. A total of 212 stone artifacts, 50 animal fossils (most of which are relatively fragmented and moderately fossilized), and 5 ostrich eggshell fossils have been discovered within the stratigraphic layers of the site. This site dates back to the late Paleolithic period and was found in the fluvial-lacustrine sedimentary strata of the Late Pleistocene, making it of significant scientific value for the study of modern human origins, lithic industry types, ancient environments, climates, and landforms.

Mazaizhen: Mazaizhen is under the jurisdiction of Erqi District, Zhengzhou City. It is located 16 kilometers southwest of the city center, bordering Rongyang City to the west, Xinmi City to the south, and Zhongyuan District to the north. To the east, it faces Jiahu Reservoir across the water, adjacent to Houzhai Township of Erqi District. The town covers an area of 29.6 square kilometers and governs 13 administrative villages, 54 natural villages, and 76 villager groups, with a current population of 21,600. On December 26, 1998, the provincial government approved the revocation of Liuhutong Township and the establishment of Mazaizhen.
