Dongzhao Site

The Dongzhao Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Henan Province.

The Dongzhao Site is located on a terrace to the south of Dongzhao Village, Gouzhao Township, in the High-Tech Zone of Zhengzhou City. It has a rectangular layout, measuring approximately 500 meters from east to west and about 350 meters from north to south, covering an area of around 180,000 square meters. The site dates from the Erlitou period, through the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, continuing into the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.

Multiple ash pits have been found along the northern cliff of the site, filled with gray soil that is loosely structured and contains particles of baked earth as well as numerous pottery fragments. The pits are 1.5 to 3.0 meters deep. Local exploratory drilling has revealed that the cultural layer in the northern part of the site has been damaged by land leveling, with a remaining thickness of 0 to 0.5 meters. In the eastern part of the site, the cultural layer is 0.8 meters thick. The southern part of the site is its highest point, featuring flat terrain and relatively intact preservation of the cultural layer, which reaches a thickness of 1 to 3 meters. The discovery of the Dongzhao Site provides valuable material for the study of pre-Qin history in the Zhengzhou region.
