Goushi Pottery Kiln Site

The Goushi Pottery Kiln Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Henan Province.

The Pottery Kiln Site is located southeast of Panyao Village in Goushi Town, Yanshi City, Luoyang, Henan Province, on the second-level terrace on the southern bank of the Majian River, where the terrain is flat. Gu-Liu Road runs along the eastern side of the site, and a village-level road cuts through the middle-southern part, leading directly to Panyao Village. The site is roughly rectangular in shape, approximately 500 meters in length from east to west and about 300 meters in width, covering a total area of around 150,000 square meters. The cultural layer is about 2–3 meters thick, and there are relatively few artifacts scattered on the ground. The collected pottery fragments mainly come from earthen mounds unearthed during modern grave digging and soil excavation on the southern bank of the Majian River. These include clay red pottery, clay gray pottery, sandy brown pottery, sandy gray pottery, and polished black pottery, with decorative patterns such as cord marks and plain surfaces. The vessel forms include cups, jars, basins, and zun (a type of ancient ritual wine vessel). Based on the discovered pottery fragments, the site is well-preserved and rich in cultural content, encompassing cultural remains from several historical periods including the Yangshao, Longshan, Erlitou, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. It provides important physical materials for studying the production and living conditions of the region’s ancient inhabitants.

In addition, the site has suffered a certain degree of damage over the years due to natural factors such as wind and rain erosion, soil erosion, and air and environmental pollution. Moreover, the site is situated on a riverbank terrace close to a village, and the local residents’ relatively weak awareness of cultural heritage protection, along with their daily production and living activities and other human factors, have all caused varying degrees of damage to the site itself. The integrity of the site and the surrounding environmental landscape have been significantly affected, highlighting an urgent need for enhanced protection and management.
