Tomb of Hua Tuo

The Tomb of Hua Tuo is a cultural relic protection unit of Henan Province.

The Tomb of Hua Tuo is situated by the Shiliang River in Shizhai Village, Suqiao Township, approximately 12.5 kilometers northwest of Xuchang City. It lies to the north of the Shiliang River and east of the Yingru Main Canal. The tomb is about 4 meters high, covering an area of around 360 square meters, and is circular in shape. In front of the tomb stands a stele pavilion, housing a stone tablet erected in the 17th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1752) through funds raised by local Confucian physicians and hereditary doctors. The tomb is surrounded by a hexagonal flower wall made of blue bricks. According to the "Book of the Later Han: Biography of Hua Tuo," Hua Tuo, also known as Fu, with the courtesy name Yuanhua, was a native of Qiao in the Pei Kingdom during the Eastern Han Dynasty (present-day Bozhou, Anhui). He was highly skilled in internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and acupuncture, and is credited with inventing an anesthetic called Mafeisan, performing abdominal surgeries on patients, and creating the Five Animal Exercises (imitating the movements of the tiger, deer, bird, monkey, and bear). Throughout his life, he refused official positions and dedicated himself to treating the sick, making outstanding contributions to the development of traditional Chinese medicine. He is revered as the Ancestor of Medicine and was later executed by Cao Cao. In September 1993, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Xuchang Municipal People's Government, and in June 2008, it was listed as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit by the Henan Provincial People's Government.
