The best season for firefly viewing in New Taipei City is from late April to early June each year. Thanks to the efforts of the Agriculture Bureau, the city has achieved fruitful results in firefly conservation and breeding. Therefore, we have specially compiled the “New Taipei City Firefly Viewing Guide,” providing 48 hidden firefly spots across the city. This helps distribute visitor traffic over time and location, reducing disturbance to the fireflies, so everyone can enjoy the romance and tranquility of “a lady’s fan chasing fireflies.”

Fireflies are indicator insects for ecological environment monitoring. Taiwan is home to over 60 species of fireflies, and more than one-third of them can be seen in New Taipei City. Moreover, fireflies can be found in 14 administrative districts of the city. This year alone, 10 new firefly viewing spots have been added compared to last year. In some areas, you can even enjoy the beautiful sight of a “firefly river,” a rare phenomenon in international metropolises and a unique kind of Taiwanese “light.”

Additionally, we would like to remind the public to keep quiet while viewing fireflies, avoid entering grasslands, refrain from littering, and never attempt to capture them or shine bright lights on them. The optimal time for firefly viewing is between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM—going too late may result in not seeing any. Firefly habitats are often located in mountainous areas with low visibility and no light pollution, so viewers should pay attention to their own safety. It is best to go in groups to avoid accidents. Before heading out, we recommend reading the “10 Questions About Firefly Viewing” in the “New Taipei City Firefly Viewing Guide,” strictly adhering to the viewing principles, not damaging habitats or disturbing their lives. Only when fireflies can sustainably thrive can we continue to enjoy the joy of dancing with them every year.

Note: Firefly viewing activities are held in 8 sessions from April 23–26 and April 30–May 3. Pedestrians or non-drivers may bring up to 4 people, totaling 5 including the applicant.
