Below, we’ve compiled several excellent secret firefly spots in New Taipei City. Take advantage of your free time on the weekend and bring the whole family to experience the beautiful sight of fireflies filling the night sky together.

When I was a kid watching the cartoon Grave of the Fireflies, I always thought the scene of tiny fireflies dancing in the night sky was simply breathtaking. But now, our surroundings are filled with man-made structures, and urban light pollution is strong, making it not easy to find fireflies. However, if you venture into the grasslands or forests just outside the city, you can still spot fireflies. Late April to early June is when the number and variety of fireflies are at their peak—making it the best season for firefly watching. Spots like the Qiwu BBQ Area in Sanxia and the abandoned mine pits in Jingting, Pingxi, are all firefly-watching destinations you can drive to.

Before heading to a firefly viewing spot, besides planning your route well, there are also many important things to keep in mind during your visit:

Loud noises can affect the airflow around the area, which is a serious disturbance to fireflies, and noise can also interfere with their courtship and mating activities.

Light pollution from cars and flashlights can impact fireflies’ ability to glow because bright lights affect their mating behavior. Fireflies cannot see red light, so using a flashlight wrapped in red plastic to emit red light causes the least disturbance to them.

Since fireflies emerge as adults in grass or woods, and snake sightings are common during the firefly season, to protect the fireflies’ reproduction and ensure your own safety, never enter the grass or forest areas.

Fireflies are extremely sensitive to their environment and need clean water sources to survive, so polluted environments can negatively affect their survival and reproduction.

Fireflies that have been touched by humans may be rejected by their peers, affecting their ability to mate and reproduce offspring, and they can easily die from being startled or touched.

Most firefly habitats are located in mountainous areas. It’s recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants to prevent mosquito bites, and wear enclosed shoes instead of sandals or slippers to avoid snake bites and prevent falls.

Between 6:30–8:00 PM is when fireflies are most active. They begin searching for mates after dark, so the later it gets, the fewer fireflies you’ll find that haven’t found a partner.

Actually, fireflies prefer slightly humid and warm weather, so it’s easier to see them on rainy nights—unless the wind is very strong, there’s a super heavy downpour, or there's a significant temperature drop. Otherwise, fireflies will still appear on regular rainy days.

Turn off your flash, use a tripod, set your aperture to the maximum, use an exposure of over 10 seconds, and shoot with a slow shutter speed.
