Jellyfish Palace

Jellyfish Palace is a witness to the formation and prosperity of Zhangjiakou's "Leather Capital." Historically, Zhangjiakou has been an important trading hub between Central China and northern ethnic minorities. Especially after the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, Zhangjiakou became a trade distribution center along the Zhangjiakou-Khalkha Road. The Zhangjiakou-Khalkha Road refers to the trade route from Zhangjiakou to Khalkha City on the Mongolian Plateau (today's Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia), serving as another major commercial artery following China’s ancient Silk Road. The prosperity of the Zhangjiakou-Khalkha Road turned Zhangjiakou into China’s largest fur distribution hub, earning it the title "Leather Capital."

A large amount of fur was processed and tanned in Zhangjiakou, requiring ample high-quality water. Thus, a spring at the foot of Woyun Mountain was discovered. Furs soaked and tanned in this spring became soft in texture and shiny in color. Benefiting greatly from this, fur merchants pooled funds and built this Jellyfish Palace over the spring in the 47th year of the Qianlong reign (1782).

The architecture of Jellyfish Palace is quaint and elegant, featuring a blue-brick memorial archway inscribed with the characters “Jellyfish Palace.” Inside the temple stands a statue of the goddess Mother Jellyfish, adorned in a tall ceremonial hat and colorful robes, while a spring gushes out beneath the temple.

The Jellyfish Palace highway area also houses the villa and statue of the patriotic general Feng Yuxiang, along with the Ji Hongchang Martyrs Memorial Hall. Visitors can pay tribute to the heroic and moving deeds of the 1933 Chahar People's Anti-Japanese Allied Army, drawing inspiration and encouragement from their legacy.
