The 2020 Taipei Lantern Festival debuted in both the eastern and western districts of Taipei on the night of the Lantern Festival, February 8. Taipei Metro specially designed an exclusive painted train for the festival along the Banqiao-Nangang Line, which connects the two main exhibition areas in Nangang and Ximen.

Four carriages of this lantern festival-exclusive train feature a story themed around the Year of the Rat lantern displays. Starting at 6 a.m. daily from now on, the train runs punctually along the Banqiao-Nangang Line, building excitement for the Taipei Lantern Festival. From February 8 onward, it will also help ferry visitors to enjoy the festivities.
A cat steals a mouse’s cheese lantern festival ticket. To get it back, the mouse chases the cat for a very long time, running all the way from the western district to the eastern district and taking in various sights. It’s only when they reach the festival venue that the mouse realizes the cat just wanted to go see the lanterns together. The familiar “hide-and-seek” game always seems to involve one chasing and the other running—but it’s hard for cats and mice to truly “be together.” This year’s Year of the Rat Taipei Lantern Festival, however, aims to bring everyone “together”!

The “Hide-and-Seek” main lantern show at the Ximen main exhibition area depicts a heartwarming and playful story of a big cat and bubble mouse playing together in the Year of the Rat. The western Ximen District is also connected via Taipei Metro’s Banqiao-Nangang Line to the Nangang exhibition area in the eastern district, allowing visitors to explore both the eastern and western zones during the festival. The painted story inside the train carriages of the Taipei Metro Banqiao-Nangang Line’s exclusive Taipei Lantern Festival train reflects this same spirit—where the cat holding cheese seeks to play with the mouse family gathered for their reunion dinner, and fantastical settings like the mice’s Heavenly Mouse Street and the Western Cat District come alive. Hidden within the painted story are visual references to the various lantern displays across the festival grounds. During the event, visitors can try to spot these references throughout the train carriages, such as “Hide-and-Seek,” “Showcasing the Divine Wind,” or other lantern zone works cleverly integrated into the designs.

When the first exclusive lantern festival train departed from Dingpu Station at 6 a.m. on January 15, popular live-streaming platform 17 Live sent well-known streamer and radio DJ Yuanyuan—who is also a famous DJ on Good Radio Network—to do an unveiling live-stream on their official account “17media.” The half-hour ride-sharing session with commuters attracted over 30,000 online viewers. DJ Yuanyuan has hosted numerous lantern festivals across Taiwan and is very familiar with such events. She introduced this year’s Taipei Lantern Festival highlights both to viewers online and to fellow commuters and students riding the metro, helping build excitement for the festival.
The 2020 Taipei Lantern Festival will be held from February 8 to 16 in both the eastern and western districts of Taipei, specifically at the Nangang and Ximen exhibition areas. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation such as Taipei Metro to travel between the two exhibition zones.
