The Great Wall from the Qin and Han Dynasties

The Great Wall from the Qin and Han Dynasties is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cultural relics workers in Zhangbei County, Hebei Province, have newly discovered 18 kilometers of early-period Great Wall during recent field investigations, preliminarily identified as dating back to the Qin and Han Dynasties.

According to reports, the newly found section is located in the eastern Batai area of Zhangbei County, stretching approximately 18 kilometers, with most of it consisting of the Han Dynasty Great Wall built over the Qin Dynasty Great Wall. The cultural relics team also discovered beacon towers with distinct Qin and Han characteristics along the wall. These towers are surrounded by earthen and stone mixed walls, with earthen and stone mixed bases below. Among them, a rare hollow watchtower from the Han Dynasty, seldom seen in northern China, was also found.

Currently, the total length of discovered Great Wall sections within Zhangbei County amounts to 108 kilometers, preliminarily identified as belonging to multiple dynasties including the Warring States Period, Qin, Han, Northern Dynasties, and Ming.
