Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area

The Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area is situated at the junction of China’s Inner Mongolia Plateau and North China Plain, extending over 300 kilometers from east to west across three counties and two districts—Guyuan, Chongli, Zhangbei, Wanquan, and Shangyi—with 132.7 kilometers currently developed. It is one of China’s most valuable hundred-kilometer scenic routes for self-driving and sightseeing, and an outstanding scenic area that integrates natural beauty, grandeur, wonder, and comfort. Like a coiling dragon, it lies atop the rugged mountain ridges along the southern edge of the Inner Mongolia grasslands, twisting and turning with undulating terrain. The blue sky meets its path, and white clouds echo along its way—hence the name “Grassland Sky Road.”

The Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area features a continental monsoon climate with distinct seasons, simultaneous rain and heat, large diurnal temperature variations, and abundant sunshine. Its notable characteristics include short spring and autumn seasons, long winters, and cool, refreshing summers with an average temperature of 17°C. The average elevation is 1,800 meters, with the highest peak reaching 2,128.7 meters. The terrain is higher in the east and lower in the west, featuring winding paths, dramatic elevation changes, crisscrossing ravines, and unique landscapes. The pleasant natural scenery and rich Bashang cultural charm present a beautiful hundred-kilometer grassland headland painting. Being there allows you to fully experience nature’s craftsmanship and stirs endless reverie.

The Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area embodies profound cultural heritage, including Mongol-Yuan culture, Great Wall culture, ancient route culture, farming culture, military culture, frontier culture, energy culture, and geological culture. Along the route, natural attractions such as “Zhongdu Grassland,” “Wuhua Meadow,” “Stone Pillar Group,” “Yanpian Mountain,” “Han’oba Geological Park,” “Rooster Comb Mountain,” “Habaqing,” and “White Dragon Cave” are unique geographical and cultural wonders of Zhangjiakou.

The Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area is just 10 kilometers in a straight line from the four major ski resorts in Chongli—the co-host city of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Winter Olympics—namely Wanlong, Secret Garden Cloudtop, Dolomiti, and Great Wall Ridge. Together with the Chongli Winter Olympics ski zone, they form a grand tourism destination. The organic integration and mutual complementarity of the two make the Grassland Sky Road a highlight of Zhangjiakou’s all-season, all-region tourism.

The Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area will adhere to the principles of fully protecting ecological resources and fully considering the interests of local farmers. It prioritizes resource conservation as its foremost task, maximally showcasing the original landscape and natural beauty, ultimately forming an integrated development of the Grassland Sky Road tourism and the surrounding regional economy as a “road and belt” initiative. The goal is to build the Grassland Sky Road Scenic Area into an internationally leveled scenic route, a world-class leisure and tourism resort, a model of Zhangjiakou’s all-region tourism destination, and a golden belt for farmers to escape poverty and achieve prosperity—transforming the Grassland Sky Road into an ecological road, a civilized road, a cultural road, and an Olympic road.
