The Baihe River is the mother river of Nanyang. It originates from the eastern foothills of the Funiu Mountains and flows 320 kilometers through Nanyang City, covering a drainage area of 12,500 square kilometers. Within the urban area, the Baihe River runs through the city for 24.5 kilometers. The Baihe Scenic Area is located along the urban section of the Baihe River in the southern part of Nanyang City. In the early days after Nanyang Prefecture was upgraded to a prefecture-level city, the municipal Party committee and government, aiming to optimize the urban environment, improve ecological quality, and build a distinctive city, put forward the goal of creating a “Water City.” The purpose was to enhance investment, carry out comprehensive management, and highlight...

the characteristics of the “Water City” by creating beautiful landscapes, with the aim of quickly transforming the scenic area into a “window” that showcases the city’s image and expands opening-up. Successive municipal Party committees and governments have attached great importance to the construction and development of the Baihe Scenic Area, investing substantial human, material, and financial resources to carry out large-scale comprehensive management and high-level development of the Baihe River. Especially since 2000, the new municipal Party committee and government have positioned the Baihe Scenic Area as the ecological axis, development axis, and landscape axis of Nanyang City. They proposed to focus on the Baihe River and develop the Baihe Scenic Area into Nanyang’s “Bund,” while formulating detailed overall and zoning plans for the Baihe Scenic Area. This further increased investment in the construction of the scenic area. Today, the Baihe Scenic Area has taken initial shape, forming a vast blue lake of 16,000 mu of water surface in the central urban area of Nanyang. Dikes, forests, roads, islands, bridges, greenery, and water complement and harmonize with one another, creating a natural ecosystem with a rustic charm in the urban area of Nanyang, making it a beautiful scenic highlight of the city.

In terms of road and bridge construction, the expanded scenic boulevard Binhe Road and Baihe Avenue extend 15.6 kilometers along the river. Zhongjing Road, Huashan Road, and Dushan Avenue run vertically across, while Wolong Bridge, Baihe Bridge, and Nanyang Bridge span the river, forming a circular thoroughfare of approximately 32 kilometers around the Baihe Scenic Area.

Regarding rubber dam construction, the newly built Fourth Rubber Dam on the Baihe River is 709 meters long. Together with the Second and Third Rubber Dams, they create a magnificent sight with interconnected structures. The completion of the Fourth Dam has increased the water area of the Baihe Scenic Area from the original 6,000 mu to 16,000 mu. The Fourth Dam has truly created a spectacular view of unified water and sky, connecting the upper and lower sections seamlessly.

In terms of boat base construction, the water sports base consists of six international A-standard racing lanes totaling 2,500 meters in length, along with grandstands and a command tower. Located on the southern bank of the Baihe River, it is one of only 12 such standard bases in China and the first water sports venue built on a natural urban river in the country.

In municipal engineering, an investment of 50 million yuan was made to develop a 200

-mu Liberation Square Memorial Monument, serving as our city’s commemorative site for the 50th anniversary of Nanyang’s liberation and as a patriotic education site, stands by the Baihe River. The Nanyang Sports Center, with an investment of 200 million yuan and a capacity of over 10,000 people, is situated on the beautiful banks of the Baihe River, becoming one of the scenic highlights of the Baihe Scenic Area.

Baihe National Urban Wetland Park is located in Nanyang City, the third-largest city in Henan Province, and has become a shining tourism jewel in the urban area of Nanyang. The park covers an area of 24.5 square kilometers, including a water area of 16,000 mu, extending over 15.6 kilometers. Like a silvery ribbon shimmering in the sunlight, the Baihe National Urban Wetland Park features dikes, forests, roads, islands, bridges, and water bodies that complement and harmonize with one another, forming a spectacular view of unified water and sky, connected seamlessly. It possesses a unique natural ecosystem and has become a beautiful tourist attraction in the urban area of Nanyang.
