Moon Bay, an extension of the winding section of Sleeping Dragon Bay, is a serene and stunning bay that changes with the waters of Kanas Lake. Like a pearl embedded in the Kanas River, its name comes from the crescent-shaped river bend formed by its S-shaped curves.

Kanas’ Sleeping Dragon Bay was formed by years of river erosion creating a wide bay. The scenic area boasts a small island right in the center of the bay, which from a high vantage point resembles a winged dragon lying peacefully in the water. The island is covered in dense forests and teeming with birds. Looking westward, you’ll see the majestic Bolbadei Mountain standing proudly, its summit capped with year-round snow, presenting a spectacular view. Winter in Kanas has always been mysterious, with its six-month-long winter wonderland transitioning from golden leaves to snow-blanketed landscapes. A single shift in color marks the change of seasons, leaving traces of the passage of time.

Winter in Kanas brings chilly winds that evoke scenes from “Snow Mountain Fox.” The majestic, vast snowfields, the crystal-clear rime on the birch forests, the ice-covered lake blanketed in white, villages with wisps of smoke rising from the snowy ground, the misty Shenxian Bay, and the silver-clad birch woods—all these elements in shades of white create the ultimate winter spectacle in Kanas. At the Tianshan Tianchi National Geopark on the northern side of Bogda Peak, the highest peak of the Tianshan Mountains, visitors can witness geological heritage sites such as modern glaciers, alpine lakes, U-shaped valleys, and ancient glacial terraces—like an open-air geological museum. The must-visit Heavenly Lake is a rare alpine lake, situated at an elevation of 1,910 meters above sea level, with a maximum depth of 105 meters. The lake water is crystal clear and surrounded by dense spruces, set against snow-capped peaks. The combination of lake and mountain scenery creates a heavenly view. Legend has it that this is the dwelling place of the Queen Mother of the West, making it a place where visitors’ wishes may come true.

Traveling from Dushanzi in Xinjiang through the hundred-mile oilfield and heading to Urho Ghost City, the unique landforms and striking red hues will catch everyone’s eye. It’s no wonder this place became a filming location for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and was selected by the renowned Chinese National Geography magazine as one of China’s top three most beautiful Yardang landforms.

Northern Xinjiang also boasts many other unique attractions: the Colorful Beach with its ever-changing rock colors, the russet-hued Huoshao Mountain, and the wildlife paradise ~ Kalameili Nature Reserve... All await travelers to explore.
