The Dayingpan Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Dayingpan Great Wall is located within Huailai County in Hebei Province, at the junction of northern and western Hebei, on the mountains south of Guanting Reservoir, not far from Beijing. It was built in the 15th year of the Zhengde reign during the Ming Dynasty and spans part of the “Huailai Basin.” The terrain here is highly varied, making the climb challenging. It serves as a natural barrier, and the combination of millennia-old weathered rocks and vegetative cover gives it an exceptionally unique landscape.

Unlike the Great Wall sections at Badaling and Mutianyu, this part is built with stones of varying sizes, giving it a more natural and unspoiled feel. Moreover, the area remains undeveloped and in its original state. With relatively few visitors, it’s a great spot for a leisurely outing. In summer, it’s perfect for camping and is a must-visit trail for many outdoor hiking enthusiasts.

Travel Tips

1. Dayingpan Village in Huailai, Hebei, being in a mountainous area, has temperatures that are about a month behind those in Beijing. The mountain winds are strong, so hiking boots and windproof jackets are essential.

2. The gravel road up the mountain has been paved with cement, allowing small cars to drive up smoothly. Just follow the winding road all the way to the top.

3. There are three routes to choose from when traveling from the city to Dayingpan.

a. Take the Badaling Expressway, exit at Donghuayuan, and then take Huailai County Road X415. b. Take Beiqing Road to Yangfang and Gaoyakou, then follow S219 through Dacun toward Zhenbiancheng. c. Take National Highway G109 through Mentougou, pass through Yanchi and Qinyu, and after seeing the railway overpass, take S219 to Dacun and head toward Zhenbiancheng. The entrance is located about 14 kilometers along County Road X415 on the left side of the driving direction—don’t miss it.

4. Dayingpan Village has historically suffered from water shortages, with most drinking water coming from rainwater collected in wells. Visitors are encouraged to bring some water or green vegetables to share with the villagers.
