Gucheng Temple
Gucheng Temple is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Gucheng Temple is located northeast of Dagucheng Village, Songjiazhuang Town, Yu County, Hebei Province, and is a Ming Dynasty structure. The Ming Dynasty water-land murals in the Sakyamuni Hall of the temple are considered a unique highlight within the county, featuring an unusual layout and design — notably, the Maitreya Palace is situated behind the main Buddha hall, which is quite rare. In 2013, Gucheng Temple was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. Currently, only one main hall (passage hall) remains, facing south and built along a north-south axis. It is a single-eave, hanging-roof structure with clay-tiled roofing, standing 8 meters tall, with a width of three bays and a depth of two bays. The wooden frame features five rafters, with single-step extensions both in front and back. The structure uses large timber materials. The front eaves are fitted with double wooden plank doors. The front porch is adorned with blue-green colored paintings, and the horse-riding panels depict Buddhist stories. The central panel shows the Four Heavenly Kings standing outside the mountain gate of a Buddhist temple, holding their symbolic weapons. The gate is built in a brick arch style, matching the style of the temple’s own entrance, likely modeled after the temple’s actual exterior. At the center-rear of the hall stands a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, flanked by his disciples Ananda and Kasyapa. The east and west side walls are painted with Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism murals, all well-preserved, vibrantly colored, and distinctly styled. Each painting also includes inscribed titles, making them rare and valuable material for the study of Ming Dynasty painting. Beneath the lower surface of the rear purlin is nailed a wooden plaque inscribed with: “Erected in the autumn of the year Dingmao, the second year of the Zhengde era, in the Great Ming Dynasty, by the people of eastern Yu Prefecture, Datong Prefecture, Shanxi Province, at Gucheng Temple, Dacheng.” A stone stele is embedded in the eastern side wall in front of the hall, inscribed with: “Dacheng Village, Eastern Yu County, Gucheng Temple’s abbot Dehou, together with devout men and women, joyfully donated pillars: Yuan Guo, Yang Shi, Wei Suo, Jia Shi, and others.” These records indicate that the temple was built in the second year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty (1507 AD) and was established through funds raised by the presiding monk Dehou.
In May 2013, Gucheng Temple was announced as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
