Dicui Pavilion
Dicui Pavilion is a scenic spot in the Grand View Garden from A Dream of Red Mansions, written by Cao Xueqin. As noted in the book Shiming: “A pavilion is for stopping—used for resting.” Dicui Pavilion is a waterside pavilion located near the Bamboo Lodge, surrounded on all sides by winding corridors and bridges. The novel describes Dicui Pavilion as follows: “(Baochai) could hear whispering voices coming from inside Dicui Pavilion. It turned out that this pavilion was entirely surrounded by winding corridors and curved bridges, built over the water in the pond, with carved lattice windows covered with paper.” This description appears in Chapter 27, titled “Dicui Pavilion: Yang Guifei Chases Butterflies While Burying Fragrant Mound: Flying Swallow Weeps over Fallen Blossoms.” From this, we can see that the waterside pavilion has two levels, with outer corridors and inner lattice windows forming an enclosure.
