Cheyou Island

Cheyou Island, also known as Gaoshan Island, is located slightly east of the center of the Changdao archipelago. In the vast expanse of the ocean, it is but an insignificant speck of sand, yet the deeper the sea, the greater its charm, and the smaller the island, the more delightful its appeal. Home to tens of thousands of seagulls, it is known as the "Island of Ten Thousand Birds."

The best time for bird watching is around May each year, when it coincides with the hatching and nesting season for seagulls and various other bird species. Bird watching isn’t limited to this small island—several nearby islets also offer great opportunities. Most maritime tour routes pass by multiple islands, and some even allow time for visitors to go ashore. Therefore, when joining a sea tour, don’t forget to bring some hard bread crusts to feed the seagulls.

Getting to the Island

To reach Cheyou Island, you must first travel to Penglai. From Penglai Pier, take a passenger ferry to the island. Ferries from Penglai Pier operate from 6:00 to 18:30, roughly every 20–30 minutes. The one-way fare is 30 RMB per person, and a round-trip ticket costs 60 RMB per person.

Transportation on the Island

Car Rental: Although taxis are available on the island, renting a car is generally more cost-effective for traveling between scenic spots.

Bicycle: Many local fishermen rent out bicycles. If you're not in a rush, you can rent one from them.

Ticket Prices

Gaoshan Wonderland Tour (North Route) ticket: 190 RMB (excluding Mazu Temple), includes visits to Miaodao Mazu Temple, Houji Island, and Cheyou Island via boat from the fishing harbor, offering views of the spectacular gathering of thousands of birds.

The official price for an all-inclusive sea tour ticket is 200 RMB per person. Tickets are purchased on board, one per person.
