Gongbeizi Mansion in Beijing
Gongbeizi Mansion, also known as the New Mansion of Prince Cheng (Yunzhi), is located on the north side of Dongjie Street in Xinjiekou, Beijing, on the southern bank of the western part of Houhai. In 1956, it was converted into Jishuitan Hospital. The mansion has weathered many storms, and today only parts of the original buildings remain, along with a pond, rockeries, and ancient trees in the garden.
Jishuitan Hospital is a hospital built within a former royal mansion. However, most of the original structures have been demolished, leaving only three wing rooms with rolled eaves and hip-and-gable roofs covered in barrel tiles from the mansion’s garden, two multi-story buildings with flush gable roofs and overlapping ridges, as well as the lake and rockeries, which now serve as leisure spaces.
Entering from the hospital’s south gate and walking around to the north side, you can see the remaining garden and a few surviving structures. Mandarin ducks can be spotted playing in the lake. In the northwest corner of the lake, atop a rockery, stands a tall pagoda, which has become a symbolic structure of the former mansion.
