The Former Site of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore is a Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The Former Site of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore has been listed as a “Municipal-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit,” a “Linyi City Youth Patriotic Education Base,” a “Countywide Revolutionary Tradition Education Base for Primary and Secondary Schools,” a “Shandong Xinhua Bookstore System Staff Ideological Education Base,” a “Yimeng Spirit Education Base,” and a “Shandong Provincial Publishing Corporation Patriotic Education Base.” In 2007, it was approved as a “Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit,” becoming a revolutionary tradition education site that promotes glorious traditions and upholds the spirit of Xinhua.
In July 1939, the CPC Southeast Shandong Special Committee decided to establish the CPC Junan County Committee. In 1941, the People’s Government of Junan County was founded. At that time, the CPC Shandong Bureau, the Provincial War Work Committee, the headquarters of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University, the editorial department and printing plant of the Masses Daily were all stationed here. On July 6, 1944, Shandong Xinhua Bookstore was officially established in Houjingbuzi Village, Junan. The predecessor of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore was the publishing department of the Masses Daily. This means the entire founding and establishment process of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore took place in Junan, and Houjingbuzi Village in Junan County is the birthplace of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore.
July 6, 2004, marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore. On December 13, 2003, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore, recreate its history and present conditions, and transform the former site into a base for revolutionary tradition education—so as to inspire future generations to keep pace with the times, carry on the legacy, and achieve new successes for Xinhua while renewing the old bonds—Junan County Xinhua Bookstore, together with relevant departments, conducted extensive surveys, repeated evaluations, gathered opinions and suggestions from experts, and submitted them for review by provincial, municipal, and county-level leaders. The original site was then restored to its original appearance. On December 28, 2003, leaders of the six major bodies in Junan County laid the foundation stone for the restoration project. After six months of intensive construction, the project was completed in June 2004. The Former Site of Shandong Xinhua Bookstore covers an area of 2,500 square meters, consisting of 3 courtyards and 30 rooms. It includes a square (with a memorial monument, construction inscription, green belt, and parking lot), a stele corridor, a photo exhibition room, a physical objects exhibition room, a leadership living and office area, an underground printing workshop, and the Xinhua Pavilion. The photo exhibition room mainly displays documentary photos of important figures, events, and achievements from before and after the bookstore’s establishment. The physical objects exhibition room showcases the printing machines, typesetting and printing tools, books published and distributed, transportation vehicles, and distribution tools used at the time. The leadership living and office area exhibits the office and daily life utensils used back then. The underground printing workshop displays the printing machines and typesetting tools of the period. The stele corridor features inscriptions dedicated to Shandong Xinhua Bookstore by veteran leaders from the Party, government, military, and publishing and distribution systems. Each exhibition area strives to recreate the rural life atmosphere of the wartime period and evoke the working environment of the soldiers of the people during wartime.
