Heroes Mountain Scenic Area

The Heroes Mountain Scenic Area is located in the downtown area of Jinan City. It stretches from Yuhan Road in the east to Heroes Mountain Road in the west, encompasses Qilishan Mountain in the south, and reaches Ma'anshan Mountain in the north. The scenic area features both undulating mountain ranges and expansive open squares, making it one of Jinan’s well-known attractions, covering a planned area of 100 hectares.

The Heroes Mountain Scenic Area enjoys a superior natural environment. With beautiful scenery and rich forest landscapes, it is truly a "mountain within the city." Its prime location makes it an ideal destination for Jinan residents to hike, exercise, and relax. The Martyrs' Cemetery and the Jinan Campaign Memorial Hall within the Heroes Mountain area are renowned patriotic education bases in Jinan, serving as sacred sites for people to honor martyrs and learn about revolutionary traditions.

Also known as Sili Mountain due to its proximity—four Chinese miles—to the southern gate of old Jinan’s inner city, the mountain is also called Chixia Mountain because of the flame-red foliage of the smoke trees that cover its slopes in autumn, creating a sea of red. A square built on the western foothills of Heroes Mountain in 1998 was thus named Chixia Square. As one of Jinan’s well-known public squares, Chixia Square covers an area of 27,300 square meters and is planted with over 70 types of trees and shrubs, including cedar, ginkgo, and Chinese sweet gum. It also features activity areas such as the Bamboo & Stone Pavilion and a children’s playground. In September 1999, a large statue of Chairman Mao was erected in the center of the square.

The square’s central theme sculpture—a 12.26-meter-tall statue of Mao Zedong—is currently the largest of its kind in Jinan. In April 2004, with an investment of 150,000 yuan, the statue and its surrounding environment were beautified and landscaped; the statue itself was cleaned and restored, new white marble railings were installed, and pine and cypress trees were planted. Chixia Square has since become an important site where people pay tribute and mourn Chairman Mao.
