Cai Gongshi Memorial Hall

The Cai Gongshi Memorial Hall is a cultural heritage protection unit of Shandong Province, as well as a base for science education and patriotic education.

The Cai Gongshi Memorial Hall is located at No. 370 Jingsi Road, Jinan City. It is a two-story Western-style building designed and constructed by Germans in the late 19th century. This site was originally the office of the Special Commissioner of the Nationalist Government’s Diplomatic Office in Jinan, Shandong. It is also the place where the martyr Cai Gongshi sacrificed his life, one of the important memorial sites of the “May 3rd Tragedy” in Jinan, and a historic building relic of significant educational value in modern Chinese history. The Cai Gongshi Memorial Hall exhibition focuses on the “May 3rd Tragedy” and the deeds of Cai Gongshi. Through physical displays, photographs, textual materials, sculptures, and restored exhibits, it recreates Cai Gongshi’s glorious life dedicated to revolution and his unwavering defense of the nation and its people. Since its opening on May 3, 2012, the memorial hall has received nearly 150,000 visitors from all walks of life, over half of whom were young people. It has become an important commemorative venue for remembering history and vowing never to forget national humiliation, as well as a key base for the public to receive patriotic education.

Cai Gongshi (1881–1928), also known by the aliases Huchi, Gongchi, and Chigong, was from Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. He was a renowned martyr of the “May 3rd Tragedy” in Jinan. In 1902, he organized the Shen Suo Ran Zhai, ostensibly for lectures but actually to promote revolution, which was soon shut down. Later, he went to Japan to study at the Hongwen School in Tokyo, where he joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (Tongmenghui) and used the newspaper Min Bao as a platform to advocate against the imperial system and promote the establishment of a republic. After returning to China, from 1904 to 1905, he followed Huang Xing and Tan Renfeng to Guangdong and participated in the Qinzhou Campaign. After its failure, he fled to Vietnam.
