Jinan Baiyun Temple

Baiyun Temple, situated in Xinglong Subdistrict, Shizhong District, was first constructed in the Sui Dynasty and is recognized as a provincial-level key cultural relic protection site. The temple preserves the remarkably intact Sui Dynasty Hall of the Three Pure Ones. Within its courtyard grows a pair of ancient ginkgo trees, their massive trunks embracing each other, exuding a powerful and time-worn presence. These are also the second oldest ginkgo trees in Jinan, boasting a history of over 1,300 years. The towering old ginkgo tree stands over 30 meters high, requiring several people to encircle its trunk. This thousand-year-old “couple tree,” with its grand form and lush foliage, features a canopy like an umbrella, formed by a closely entwined male and female tree. Ginkgo trees over a thousand years old are extremely rare in northern China, and the presence of a coupled male-female pair is even more uncommon.
