Built in 1916, it became the office and research center after the merger of the Geological Institute and the Geological Survey, both founded in 1913. The existing buildings consist of the South Building (Library Building), the West Building (Office Building), and the North Building (Qinyuan Fuel Research Laboratory Building). The Geological Survey of China was one of China’s earliest institutions for geological scientific research and marks an important milestone in the institutionalization of modern science in China. Renowned scientists such as Zhang Hongzhao, Ding Wenjiang, Weng Wenhao, Pei Wenzhong, and Li Siguang all once worked here.
