Jinan Botanical Garden

Jinan Botanical Garden is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Jinan Botanical Garden is located in Bucun, Zhangqiu District, Jinan City, covering an area of 1,158 mu (data from 2015). It was funded and constructed by the Jinan Municipal Bureau of Gardens in March 2004 and officially opened to the public on September 26, 2006.

Jinan Botanical Garden is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and one of the New Top Ten Scenic Spots of Qilu Landscape. It is also recognized as an outstanding tourist attraction in Jinan City. The garden is divided into more than ten areas, including the Science Popularization Hall, Ginkgo Garden, and Peony Garden. It serves multiple functions such as botanical scientific research, germplasm resource conservation, plant knowledge dissemination, promotion of new and superior plants, sightseeing, leisure, and ecological demonstration. It is a new-generation comprehensive botanical garden in Jinan, Shandong.

Jinan Botanical Garden is situated in the mid-latitude zone and features a warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate. The climate is characterized by distinct monsoon influences and clearly defined seasons: dry and windy springs, hot and rainy summers, cool and clear autumns, and cold, less snowy winters. The annual average temperature is 13.8°C, with a frost-free period of 178 days. The highest monthly average temperature is 27.2°C (July), and the lowest is -3.2°C (January). The annual average precipitation is 685 mm, and the annual sunshine duration is 1,870.9 hours (2009).

The plant exhibition area of Jinan Botanical Garden primarily focuses on introducing and collecting temperate tree species from northeastern, northwestern, northern, and central-southern China. The plan includes the introduction and cultivation of 1,09 families and 936 species of plants. To date, 88 families, 200 genera, and 533 species (nearly 400,000 plants) have been introduced and cultivated. The garden also conserves over 10 types of rare and endangered plants (including national first- and second-class protected plants), such as Styrax obassia Sieb. et Zucc., Phellodendron amurense Rupr., Fraxinus hupehensis Chu, Shanget Su, Zelkova schneideriana, Pteroceltis tatarinowii Maxim., Ginkgo biloba L., Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg., Eucommia ulmoides Oliv., and Tulipa gesneriana. Additionally, it has introduced and cultivated highly ornamental foreign plant varieties such as North American crabapples, Japanese cherry blossoms, and American mint. It has been designated as the "Shandong Province Demonstration and Promotion Base for New Achievements in Overseas-Introduced Flowering Plants and Seedlings."

The plant planning adopts a principle that combines classification systems with specialized gardens, dividing the area into gymnosperm and angiosperm zones.

In the gymnosperm area, the classification system of Professor Zheng Wanjun is used, featuring Cycadaceae, Ginkgoaceae, Pinaceae, Cupressaceae, Taxaceae, Podocarpaceae, and Cephalotaxaceae.

In the angiosperm area, the classification system of American botanist Arthur Cronquist is used to display specialized plants. Angiosperms are divided into two main classes: Dicotyledoneae (Magnoliopsida) and Monocotyledoneae (Liliopsida). The Dicotyledoneae (Magnoliopsida) is divided into six subclasses: Magnoliidae, Hamamelidae, Caryophyllidae, Dilleniidae, Rosidae, and Asteridae. The Monocotyledoneae (Liliopsida) is divided into five subclasses: Arecidae, Alismatidae, Commelinidae, Zingiberidae, and Liliidae.
