Longshan Subdistrict Office, Zhangqiu City
Scenic Area Title: Rural Tourism (Most Beautiful Village in Shandong)
Longshan Subdistrict Office is located in the western part of Zhangqiu City. It is a “Provincial Key Cultural Industry Unit,” a “Provincial Characteristic Agricultural Industry Unit,” and the birthplace of the Longshan Culture. Chinese prehistoric culture generally went through five stages: Xihexian, Beixin, Dawenkou, Longshan, and Yueshi cultures. Among them, two—Xihexian and Longshan cultures—were first discovered and named here in Longshan. Artifacts from other cultural stages are also abundant in the area. In particular, the discovery of the Longshan Culture powerfully refuted the theory that Chinese civilization originated in the West, confirming the long-standing and splendid heritage of Chinese culture.
The Chengziya Site is the renowned birthplace of the Longshan Culture. This 4,500-year-old cultural site from the Longshan period covers an area of 233,600 square meters, measuring 520 meters from north to south and 430 meters from east to west. It is situated at the confluence of the Wuyuan River east of Longshan Village, resembling a city wall—hence the name Chengziya (City Wall Cliff). It is a national-level cultural heritage protection unit. The Chengziya Site Museum, completed in September 1994, covers a total area of 27,000 square meters. It primarily displays artifacts unearthed from the Longshan Culture period and comprehensively showcases the region’s historical, cultural, and craft heritage. It is a key component of Longshan cultural tourism. The hallmark artifact of the Longshan Culture is black pottery, characterized by its dark-colored ceramics. Longshan black pottery represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese culture and technological innovation—"as black as lacquer, as shiny as a mirror, as thin as paper, as hard as porcelain, feeling almost weightless when lifted, and producing a crisp sound when struck." The pottery-making craftsmanship reached a level that later generations could hardly match, marking the zenith of China’s ceramic history. It is hailed as “the most exquisite work of Earth’s civilization 4,000 years ago” and reflects the highly developed material culture of cities at the time. The ceramic art of the Longshan Culture is a precious legacy of traditional Chinese culture and has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Jinan City.
The Root of Provincial Capital Jinan—The Site of the Ancient Dongpingling City. Located about 2 kilometers northeast of the Chengziya Site, the birthplace of the famous Longshan Culture, this site has a history of 1,500 years. It served as the administrative center of the Jinan Kingdom, Jinan Commandery, and Pingling County during the Han Dynasty. This ancient city holds significant value for studying history, especially the political, economic, and cultural history of the Jinan region, and is also an important element in the development of Longshan cultural tourism.
The Xihexian Culture Site is a Neolithic cultural site with a history of over 8,500 years, covering a total area of 160,000 square meters. Longhu (Duzhang Reservoir) is where the lower reaches of the Juye River and Wuyuan River converge. The area features unique terrain, a vast water surface, and beautiful natural scenery, spanning a total area of 100 square meters, making it an important site for tourism development.
Longshan boasts fertile land and abundant produce. Longshan Tofu, known as one of the “Three Treasures,” is quite famous. It is a traditional specialty of Zhangqiu, produced in large quantities, with a rich flavor and white color, earning long-standing renown. Longshan Millet is another famous specialty of Zhangqiu, one of China’s Four Famous Millets and the foremost of Longshan’s “Three Treasures,” often referred to as “Long Rice.” With its unique quality, it was once selected as a tribute for imperial households throughout various dynasties. Commonly called “Yintianhan” (Dry Sky Millet) by locals, it earned the name because its leaves curl up on cloudy days, resembling drought conditions. The millet it produces is fragrant, golden yellow, with large, round grains and sticky, aromatic qualities. When cooked into porridge, it forms a layer of shiny yellow rice oil on the surface. It tastes deliciously rich and is truly a nourishing delicacy.
