The Ancient Architectural Complex of Suozhuang

The Ancient Architectural Complex of Suozhuang is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Ancient Architectural Complex of Suozhuang includes three individual ancient structures: the Suozhuang Wenchang Pavilion, the YuanYin Tower, and the Yaowang Temple. Protected area: Wenchang Pavilion — starting from the foundation of the Wenchang Pavilion, it extends east to the west wall base of the Yaowang Temple, west to the north-south extension line 2 meters west of the west wall base, south to the stair wall base, and north to the residential houses at the north wall base. Associated cultural relics: one screen wall, one stone stele; Yaowang Temple — extends east to 4 meters east of the east wall base of the Yaowang Temple (courtyard wall base), west to the Wenchang Pavilion, south to 2.6 meters south of the Yaowang Temple wall base (east-west extension line of the north wall base of the residential houses), and north to 1 meter north of the Yaowang Temple north wall base. YuanYin Tower — extends 2 meters outward from the foundation in the east, south, and west directions, and north to the residential wall base. The construction control zone of the Ancient Architectural Complex of Suozhuang is the same as the protected area.

The Suozhuang Wenchang Pavilion is located to the west of Suozhuang Village on Xianggongzhuang Subdistrict. It is built from square hewn stones and connects an east-west village road. The platform is 14.4 meters long from north to south and 8.7 meters wide from east to west, covering an area of 125.3 square meters. The gateway arch has a northern-southern width of 3.1 meters and a height of about 5 meters; the western gateway arch is 2.68 meters wide from north to south and 2.62 meters high. The interior floor of the gateway is paved with flagstones, which connect to the flagstone path on the north side of the Yaowang Temple. Stone steles are embedded on the inner walls of the north and south sides of the gateway. The inscription on the southern stele is partially blurred, recording “Erected on the eleventh day of the second month of the fifteenth year of the Jiaqing reign”; the northern stele bears no inscription. The west side lintel of the platform is inscribed with the three large characters “Wenchang Pavilion.” The pressure stones on both sides of the stone arch are carved with relief images of mythical beasts such as qilin and auspicious flowers like lotus. The entire structure uses refined materials and is meticulously arranged. On the platform stands a screen wall, 1.9 meters long, 0.43 meters thick, and 2.71 meters high, with a black tubular tile hip-and-gable roof. The main ridge features decorative floral tiles with animal ornaments, and the hip ridges are adorned with bell-patterned gable ornaments.

The YuanYin Tower is located to the west of Suozhuang Village, approximately 15 meters west of the Wenchang Pavilion. It is a square stone pavilion with a pyramidal roof, supported by square stone pillars. It is 2.3 meters wide, with a Sumeru pedestal-style base that is 2.94 meters wide and 1.2 meters high, and an overall height of 5.04 meters, covering an area of 8.64 square meters. The beams between the pillar tops are carved with floral patterns mimicking painted designs, above which sit square eave purlins. The eastern purlin features a stone plaque on its outer side, with the three characters “YuanYin Tower” in relief. Stone couplets are carved on the pillars on either side of the plaque: the upper line reads “Moonlight faint, stars sparse, where monks knock,” and the lower line “Lightning flashes, clouds drift, dreams awaken.” The eaves consist of two stone slabs carved with tile ends, arranged in a shape resembling a roof.

The Yaowang Temple is located to the east of the Wenchang Pavilion. The temple faces south and is 7.8 meters wide and 4.68 meters deep, with an eave height of 3.15 meters and a construction area of 36.5 square meters. The roof style is a rolled shed-style hip-and-gable roof, covered with tubular tiles and featuring a ridge with vertical ridges that include ridge beasts and running beasts. The interior has no beam frame and instead uses bluestone to form a round vaulted arch. The southern façade has six bluestone blocks forming the side piers, while the northern façade has only one bluestone block. The eaves are constructed from two layers of bluestone slabs. The door is an arched gateway, with the arch top carved with a pattern of intertwined branches. The eastern façade wall bears the inscription “Reconstructed in the 19th Year of Qianlong.” The gate’s side pillars feature exquisite relief carvings: facing outward is a dragon-cloud totem, and inward, symmetrically placed, is an auspicious horse totem. The interior walls are coated with white lime plaster. The doors and windows of the main hall are of modern design.

On June 23, 2015, the Ancient Architectural Complex of Suozhuang was announced by the People’s Government of Shandong Province as part of the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Shandong.
