Zhangqiu Baozhu Temple

Zhangqiu Baozhu Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Jinan City.

Baozhu Temple is located on Baozhu Mountain, southeast of Sanjiaowan Village, Guanzhuang Subdistrict Office. It was first built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. In January 2000, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Zhangqiu Municipal Government.

Overview: The temple complex is a single-courtyard structure facing south, arranged symmetrically along a central axis, and comprises the main hall, east side hall, west side hall, and the mountain gate. The temple covers an area of over 380 square meters, with a built-up area of nearly 100 square meters.

The main hall faces south and has a width of three bays and a depth of one bay, covering a floor area of about 38 square meters. The roof is a traditional flush-gable roof covered with gray tiles. The central ridge rises from the middle to both ends and features carved dragon motifs, with a mythical beast and a vertical ridge ornament at each end. Inside, there are two beams with painted designs on the surface. The roof is constructed with blue stone arched vaults, and the joints are filled with glutinous rice paste to enhance stability. The main structure is built with blue stones, with iron sheets and crushed stones used to level the joints. The hall houses three clay sculptures.

The west side hall is three bays wide and one bay deep, with an area of about 26 square meters. The roof is a traditional flush-gable roof covered with small gray tiles. The eastern side of the central ridge is carved with a dragon motif, while the western side features a phoenix design. There are no beam frames inside; instead, the space is covered with blue stone arched vaults, and the joints are filled with glutinous rice paste. The walls are made of blue stone. The hall also contains three clay sculptures. The existing east side hall is a later reconstruction, as the original building was destroyed. Its architectural style is largely similar to that of the west side hall.

The mountain gate faces south and has a rectangular floor plan, one bay wide and one bay deep, covering a construction area of about 13 square meters. It is built with blue stones, and the roof is a traditional flush-gable roof covered with small gray tiles. The ends of the central ridge are adorned with decorative ridge beasts. There are no beam frames inside; the space is covered with blue stone arched vaults, and the joints are filled with glutinous rice paste.

Baozhu Temple is one of the few Buddhist stone structures in our city, with rare wooden elements. Its exquisite craftsmanship reflects superior architectural techniques and provides valuable physical material for the study of Qing Dynasty religious and stone architecture history. The entire structure is compact and delicate, with a rational layout. Experts from the Jinan Municipal Institute of Archaeology consider that the temple harmonizes with the surrounding mountain and water landscape, creating a vertically layered profile that appears to occupy the sky rather than the land — a uniquely snug and graceful design.

Construction Date: It is said that an inscribed stone tablet within the temple originally recorded the details of its construction and history. However, the temple suffered severe damage during the Cultural Revolution, and the tablet was destroyed. Based on legend and supporting historical records, Baozhu Temple was built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty.
