Qunying Lake Wetland Park

Qunying Lake Wetland Park is located 1.5 kilometers northwest of Nangong City, Hebei Province, at longitude 115°21′15″–115°22′28″ and latitude 37°23′14″–37°21′43″, with an average elevation of 21 meters at the lake bottom. This wetland area was situated near the ancient Jiongshui River during the Western Han Dynasty. After the river dried up by the end of the Tang Dynasty, the downstream area became silted and turned into marshy lowlands. In the 14th year of the Chenghua reign of the Ming Dynasty (1478), after floods destroyed the city, it was called “Ancient Water Pond.” During the Qing Dynasty, it was known as “Old City Pond,” and after 1912, it became known as “Old City Depression.” In 1976, with the approval of the Xingtai Regional Committee and Administrative Office, the Old City Depression was transformed into Qunying Lake, consisting of three lake areas—southern, northern, and western—forming an “L” shape. The maximum length from north to south is 2,560 meters, and the maximum width from east to west is 1,500 meters, with a water storage area of over 3,000 mu and a maximum water storage capacity of 10 million cubic meters. This wetland is the largest above-ground water storage lake on the plains of Xingtai City.

In January 2007, the provincial-level wetland park was approved for establishment by the Hebei Provincial Forestry Bureau. In the same year, the “Overall Plan for Qunying Lake Wetland Park in Nangong City, Hebei Province” was jointly compiled by the Hebei Provincial Forestry Survey, Planning and Design Institute and Hebei Agricultural University, and was approved and implemented by the provincial forestry bureau. The planned total area is 7,553 mu, divided mainly into five functional zones: key protection zone, science education exhibition zone, tourism activity zone, management service zone, and production operation zone.

The Nangong Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government attach great importance to the construction of the wetland park, listing it as the “No. 1 Project” of the municipal government. Following the principles of “respecting nature, prioritizing ecology, rational use, and sustainable development,” they have further increased funding and construction efforts to comprehensively improve and restore the ecological environment of Qunying Lake Wetland Park and its surrounding areas, maintain the integrity and service functions of the wetland ecosystem, and maximize the ecological, economic, and social benefits of the wetland. Their goal is to build a national-level “Nangong Wetland” brand. Over the past two years, the Nangong Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government have invested more than 13 million yuan, focusing on the restoration and reinforcement of the eastern and northern dikes of Qunying Lake and the construction of various scenic spots within the park. They have completed the improvement of 6,300 meters of lake embankments, 2,000 meters of roads, and the greening and beautification of 1,300 mu of green space, planting a total of 145,000 trees, 600,000 flowering shrubs, and raising 300,000 seedlings. These efforts have yielded initial results in the construction of the wetland park, rapidly restoring the natural landscape and increasing the population of wild bird species. Through activities such as wetland research, science education, tourism, sightseeing, entertainment, and leisure, the natural resources are well protected and utilized, further enhancing the livability of Nangong City and providing residents with a venue that integrates eco-tourism, science education, and leisure fitness.
