Liuli Kiln Site

The Liuli Kiln Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Liuli Kiln Site is located about 500 meters east of Liuli Village, JiuXianqiao Subdistrict Office, Yanzhou City, on both banks of the Si River, covering an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Legend has it that there were as many as 72 kilns, but currently only six sections of ruined kiln walls remain—five on the east bank of the Si River and one on the west. The remnants are made of bricks, arc-shaped, constructed with refractory bricks, and have a diameter of about 3.2 meters. The interior of the walls contains a layer of red, iron-hard glaze. A large number of broken roof tile fragments are exposed on the ground, most of which are large, measuring 29 centimeters in width and 2.3 centimeters in thickness, and are mostly coated with green glaze. According to historical records, this kiln site exclusively supplied building materials for the construction of the Lu Prince’s Mansion in Yanzhou and the Confucius Mansion in Qufu at the time. In October 2009, it was approved and announced as part of the third batch of Yanzhou Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Units by the Yanzhou Municipal People’s Government, and in November 2012, it was designated as a Jining Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

In 2013, the Liuli Kiln Site was announced as part of the fourth batch of Shandong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units by the Shandong Provincial People’s Government.

JiuXianqiao Subdistrict: Established in June 2008, JiuXianqiao Subdistrict of Yanzhou City is located in the eastern part of the city. It has three rivers within its boundaries—the Si River, Xiaoyi River, and Fu River—and covers an area of 11.3 square kilometers. In 2012, it governed 13 administrative villages and 6 communities. By the end of 2013, the subdistrict had a total population of 32,899, including 21,285 permanent urban residents, accounting for an urbanization rate of 65%.
