Ancient Residential Buildings in Guocun

The ancient residential buildings in Guocun are a cultural relic protection unit of Jining City.

The ancient residential buildings in Guocun are located within the compound of the Guocun Supply and Marketing Cooperative in Xinyi Town, Yanzhou District. Built in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), the house faces south and has a width of five bays spanning 17.5 meters and a depth of 4.60 meters, featuring a brick-and-wood structure. The eastern gable end is a two-story pavilion-style structure, and the wooden beams on the interior ceiling retain the inscription “Built on the 27th day of the Huayue month in the 22nd year of the Republic of China, the year of Guiyou, the auspicious day of Yiyi.” The rest of the structure is single-story with a flat roof and battlements. The main structure remains largely intact today, with the beams and foundations still very solid. This discovery holds significant value for studying the architectural style characteristics of residences during the Republic of China period as well as the local cultural and historical background. In October 2009, it was approved and announced as part of the third batch of cultural relic protection units of Yanzhou City by the Yanzhou Municipal People’s Government, and in November 2012, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Jining City.

Xinyi Town: Located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Yanzhou District, Xinyi Town covers an area of 66 square kilometers and has a population of 50,179. It lies on the alluvial plain of the Yellow River, at an elevation of 30 meters, and features a temperate monsoon climate. The area is abundant in wheat, corn, silkworm cocoons, and green onions, and also has rich reserves of yellow sand and groundwater. As part of the land of Confucius and Mencius, it is one of the most populous and largest towns in Yanzhou. The local economy is relatively developed, situated at the crossroads between four surrounding counties and cities, giving it a strategically superior location with well-developed transportation. All villages are connected by asphalt roads, have access to program-controlled telephones and cable television, and the sericulture and silk industry is thriving, earning it the reputation of the “Hometown of Silkworm and Silk.”
