Shaoling Terrace

Shaoling Terrace is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Shaoling Terrace is located to the east of Zhongyu Bridge in the city (within the current Air Defense Office compound on the north bank of the Fu River). The terrace is approximately 40 meters in both length and width, and 12 meters high. Between 742–756 AD (during the Tang Dynasty’s Tianbao and Zhide eras), Du Fu visited his father (who was the Sima official in Yanzhou) three times in Yanzhou. He climbed the southern tower of Yanzhou City, gazed into the distance, and was filled with emotion, leading him to write his famous poem “Climbing the Tower of Yanzhou City.” In 1370 (the third year of the Ming Hongwu era), Yanzhou was elevated to a prefecture, and the city was expanded southward. At the spot where Du Fu had climbed the tower, a section of the city wall was preserved and converted into a terrace with brick steps, hence the name “Shaoling Terrace.” During the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, Magistrate Zhao Huiya built an octagonal pavilion on the terrace and erected the “Statue Stele of Du Gong” in the center of the pavilion. Shaoling Terrace became one of the celebrated scenic spots of Yanzhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties, known as “Autumn Moon over the Southern Tower,” which was one of the Eight Scenic Views. In 1956, the octagonal pavilion on the terrace was dismantled by a military communication unit and replaced with a warning observation post, while an air raid shelter was dug beneath the terrace. The “Statue Stele of Du Gong” was moved to the museum for preservation. In 1997, during the construction of Jiuzhou Road, the southern slope of Shaoling Terrace was faced with blue bricks, and the three large characters “Shaoling Terrace” were engraved in the middle of the wall. In March 2001, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Jining City. According to the Yanzhou Government Document (2009) No. 28, the protected area extends 9 meters outward from the outer edge of Shaoling Terrace in all directions. The construction control zone extends 30 meters outward from the outer boundary of the protected area in all directions.

It governs 5 village committees and 19 community neighborhood committees, with a total of 35,588 households and 144,551 residents, including 70,169 females and 137,551 non-agricultural residents. The natural population growth rate is 4.08‰.

In 2012, the gross regional product reached 4.5 billion yuan, an increase of 28% over the previous year.
