Site of Malou

The Site of Malou is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Site of Malou is located on a highland about 100 meters south of Malou Village in Xinyi Town. It was discovered during the 1981 cultural relics survey. The site stretches 150 meters from north to south and 100 meters from east to west. It is a Yueshi culture site. The cultural deposit is approximately 2 meters thick, with visible remains on the ground such as ash pits and fired earth. Collected samples include black pottery zun, basins, and boxes made of fine clay; pottery shards such as gray and red pottery li, bowls, and lids made of sandy clay; as well as a few painted pottery pieces. The eastern part of the site has been partially damaged due to soil extraction. In 1985, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit of Jining City. According to the Yanzhou Government Document No. 28 (2009), the protected area is defined with the marker stele as the center point, extending 20 meters east, 150 meters west, 100 meters south, and 20 meters north. The construction control zone extends 50 meters outward from the boundary of the protected area in all directions.

Xinyi Town: Xinyi Town is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Yanzhou City, covering an area of 66 square kilometers with a population of 50,179. It lies on the Yellow River alluvial plain at an elevation of 30 meters and has a temperate monsoon climate. The area is abundant in wheat, corn, silkworm cocoons, and green onions, and has rich reserves of yellow sand and groundwater. As part of the land of Confucius and Mencius, it is one of the most populous and largest towns in Yanzhou. The local economy is relatively developed, situated at the crossroads of four surrounding counties and cities, enjoying a superior geographical location and well-developed transportation. All villages are connected by asphalt roads, with access to program-controlled telephones and cable television. The sericulture and silk industry is advanced, earning it the reputation of “Hometown of Sericulture.”
