The Dongdun Village Site

The Dongdun Village Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Shandong Province.

The Dongdun Village Site is located about 500 meters southeast of Dongdun Village, Xinyi Town, Yanzhou District. It is an elevated earthen mound. Discovered during the 1973 cultural relics survey, the site features accumulated deposits up to 4 meters high, stretching 40 meters from north to south and 40 meters from east to west. It marks the southeastern corner of an ancient city from the Han Dynasty. The stratified deposits clearly display the rammed-earth construction traces of the city wall. The ramming pits are grouped in sevens, with each layer approximately 4–6 cm thick. Artifacts predating the Spring and Autumn period were found within these layers. These findings largely align with historical records of the ancient Han city. In 1984, it was designated as a county-level protected cultural heritage site, and in 1992, it was listed as part of the second batch of Shandong Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units.

Xinyi Town: Xinyi Town is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Yanzhou District, covering an area of 66 square kilometers with a population of 50,179. It lies on the Yellow River alluvial plain at an elevation of 30 meters and has a temperate monsoon climate. The area is abundant in wheat, corn, silkworm cocoons, and green onions, and has rich reserves of yellow sand and groundwater. Known as part of the land of Confucius and Mencius, Xinyi is a large town in Yanzhou in terms of both population and area. The local economy is relatively developed, situated at a key crossroads among four surrounding counties and cities, which gives it a superior geographic location and well-developed transportation. All villages are connected by asphalt roads, have access to program-controlled telephones and cable television. The sericulture and silk industry is thriving, earning the town the reputation of the “Hometown of Silkworm and Silk.”
