Qufu Confucius Lake National Wetland Park

Qufu Confucius Lake National Wetland Park is a national-level wetland park.

The planned total area of Confucius Lake National Wetland Park is 1,505.2 hectares, of which 1,093.8 hectares are wetlands, accounting for 72.7% of the total area. It mainly consists of reservoir-type wetlands and marsh-type wetlands. Since being approved as a pilot site in January 2013, the wetland park has achieved remarkable results in wetland protection, restoration, management, and construction. First, Qufu City carried out greening work on the mountainous areas within the park through spring afforestation, rainy season tree planting, and the Obayashi Foundation project, covering an area of over 2,000 mu with an investment of 30 million yuan. Second, wetland vegetation restoration and habitat protection and recovery projects were implemented. In the FuZi Cave River, TianHuang River, and ZhangMa River — the three rivers flowing into the lake area — as well as the restoration and reconstruction zones of the wetland park, wetland restoration was carried out on 1,000 mu by constructing bio-islands, bio-ponds, converting farmland back to wetlands, and planting reeds. Nearly 200 mu of berry-producing plants and nectariferous plants were planted to provide food for birds and habitats for animals in the park. Third, key efforts were made to develop wetland scenic spots in the southwest of Dongguan Village and in front of ancient buildings in Xiguan Village. Construction projects included waterfront wooden boardwalks, bird-watching (scenic) pavilions, interconnected pond water systems, educational sign displays, walking trails, and the planting of greenery. Fourth, water quality monitoring equipment was installed, and a research base was established in collaboration with Qufu Normal University. Fifth, an investment of 10 million yuan was made to widen, repair, green, and illuminate the lakeside road, and a science education and publicity center was built, along with the installation of a wetland park signage and interpretation system. Sixth, a comprehensive environmental improvement project for the service industry in the wetland park and its lake basin was carried out, achieving classified, resourceful, and harmless disposal of kitchen waste generated annually. Seventh, a comprehensive environmental improvement project was implemented for villages in the wetland park area, using the process of “sedimentation ponds + oxidation ponds + two-stage surface flow wetlands + stabilization ponds” to achieve water purification. Eighth, joint actions were taken to clear fish farming cages in the lake area and sand mining sites around the park, and a number of small enterprises and workshops in the lake basin area that failed to meet emission standards were shut down, ensuring the safety of the wetland park’s water quality and ecology. Ninth, routine patrols and soil environmental protection measures were carried out to reduce pesticide use and lower non-point source pollution.
