Xin River

The Xin River, one of the five major tributaries of the Poyang Lake system. It originates from the Yushui River south of Huaiyu Mountain at the border of Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, and the Fengxi River at the northern foot of the Wuyi Mountains. The two streams converge in Shangrao and are henceforth called the Xin River. The main course flows from east to west, passing through Shangrao, Yanshan, Yiyang, Guixi, Yingtan, Yujiang, and Yugan counties and cities. Within Yugan County, it splits into two branches that flow into Poyang Lake, receiving major tributaries along the way such as the Shixi, Yanshan, Chenfang, Gexi, Luotang, and Baita rivers. It has a total length of 313 kilometers and a drainage area of 17,600 square kilometers. The Xin River is divided into upper, middle, and lower reaches, with Shangrao and Yingtan serving as boundaries. The upper reach is predominantly characterized by mid-to-low mountains with significant terrain undulations. The middle reach forms the Xin River Basin, where the surrounding land gradually slopes downward from the north, east, and south toward the center and inclines westward. The lower reach consists of the alluvial plain of Poyang Lake, featuring flat and open terrain. The Xin River Basin has approximately 55,000 various irrigation facilities in place, controlling a water volume of 2.3 billion cubic meters. The central part of the basin, particularly around Yanshan and Shangrao, enjoys fertile agricultural land and is known as the “Granary of Northeastern Jiangxi.” The basin is rich in forest resources, and important mineral deposits include copper, lead, zinc, serpentine, tungsten, uranium, gold, silver, rare metals, and rare earth elements. The Xin River Basin boasts beautiful scenery and numerous historical and cultural sites. Sanqing Mountain in the upper reaches of the Xin River and Longhu Mountain in the middle and lower reaches of the Baita River tributary are both sacred Taoist sites.
