Xishan Temple

Xishan Temple is located on Xishan, the front hill of Rifeng Mountain, at the border between Liujia and Wujia Natural Villages in Xiaqiao Village, Rifeng Town, Lichuan County — an area renowned for its sacred family aura and spiritual energy. Also known as "Tianfeng Temple," it covers an area of nearly ten acres, with a built-up area of 2,000 square meters. According to the *Xincheng County Annals*, there was once a flat piece of land atop Rifeng Mountain, several feet wide and belt-like in length. During the Song Dynasty, Tianfeng Temple was built there. In the Ming Dynasty, Deng Yuanxi, a renowned local Neo-Confucian scholar and literary figure — later honored in both the Prefectural and Provincial Temples of Virtuous Scholars and the Famous Scholars of Neo-Confucianism in Yuzhang — studied in this temple. Due to years of neglect and fire damage, it collapsed during the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty. In the mid-Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (around 1887), it was relocated and rebuilt on Xishan, the front hill of Rifeng Mountain, hence the name "Xishan Temple." The temple gained widespread fame for its statue of the monk Ji Gong, and has long been revered by devotees, with incense burning continuously for over a century. In the 1990s, as the nation prospered and Buddhism flourished, Xishan Temple was rebuilt under the devotion of Nun Zhengyun, who led local residents in raising funds to reconstruct the East and West Main Halls. In 2012, Tu Yuhua (Dharma name: Rihua), a devout local layperson, led efforts to build the new Mahavira Hall. Among the Four Blessed Temples of Lichuan representing Fortune, Prosperity, Longevity, and Happiness, the first three are tucked away in rural areas, while Xishan Temple stands alone in the bustling city, unafraid of the commotion.
