Wugong Lake

Wugong Lake is a national water conservancy scenic area.

Wugong Lake, originally named Sheshang Reservoir, is one of the 24 large reservoirs in Jiangxi Province. With a water storage capacity of 170 million cubic meters and a surface area of 20,000 mu, it is managed by the Sheshang Reservoir Management Bureau of Anfu County. It oversees “two reservoirs and one canal,” three power stations, and has a total installed capacity of 15,000 kilowatts. It gets its name from being located at the foot of Wugong Mountain, the highest mountain in Jiangxi Province, and is an important part of the Wugong Mountain National Forest Park scenic area. It lies 30 kilometers south of Mount Mingyue Scenic Area, 16 kilometers west of the Hot Spring Resort, 96 kilometers from the Gan-Guang Expressway, and 180 kilometers from Jinggangshan.

The Wugong Lake scenic area boasts abundant natural resources, with a forest coverage rate of 95%. From afar, it presents an expanse of lush greenery, and walking through it means being shaded by trees. More than ten types of rare national tree species such as yew, podocarpus, and ginkgo dot the vast landscape. Due to years of effective protection, it is also a habitat for rare animals such as egrets, wild ducks, wild boars, and stump-tailed macaques. The lake is dotted with islands, embraced by verdant surroundings, with high terrain and dense vegetation, earning it the reputation of a natural “oxygen bar.” There are no industrial pollution sources around the lake area, and the water quality is excellent, with a pure and sweet taste that meets the national Class A scenic water standards. The lake is rich in fish, with 15 species found here, especially known for its abundance of catfish, whitebait, black carp, and spotted bass. When admiring the beauty of Sheshang, Wugong Lake stands out the most. The towering dam guards the surrounding peaks; the misty waters stretch boundlessly, embracing the mountains and rivers. The most delightful experience is taking a boat ride along General Ridge to tour Wugong Lake, where towering green mountains line both shores, and the lake surface is vast and shimmering. Occasionally, a few eagles soar overhead, capturing a vibrant ink-painting-like scene. At dusk, fishermen’s songs echo, sunset clouds lock the lake, and golden hues overflow, making you reluctant to leave this beautiful water-and-sky blend.

Among the many islands in Wugong Lake, Peach Blossom Island is the most famous, covering over 80 acres. In the spring when flowers bloom, sitting at the bow of the boat, you can see clusters of fiery red in the distance, glowing like morning clouds in the mist. Once you dock and step ashore, a fragrant aroma greets you, and everywhere you look, petals drift lightly, with countless fallen blossoms. “When all earthly blooms fade, Wugong’s peach blossoms just begin to bloom.”

The downstream section of Wugong Lake, near Yantoupo, features nine twists and eighteen turns, stretching over ten miles. Surrounded by mountains and embraced by water, it is serene, beautiful, and exquisitely endless. Egrets soar above, wild ducks search for fish, and all living things compete freely in the frosty sky. The villages nestled in the secluded valleys resemble a paradise on earth, captivating the heart and forming the extraordinary scenery of the “Nine-Twist Gallery,” which is also a favorite spot for rafting enthusiasts. The Longxing Nunnery within the scenic area has a long history, originally built in the Tang-Jin Tianfu era, Renyin year (943 AD, the seventh year of Tianfu), and its incense has remained strong for a thousand years, attracting nearly 10,000 worshippers each year. The scenic area is rich in legends, including beautiful and magical tales such as “Nine Sons Marry Ten Prefects,” “Pearl Terrace,” and “Riding a Tiger in Meishan.” To support the “Tourism Prosperity County” strategy formulated by the Anfu County Party Committee and County Government, the Sheshang Reservoir Management Bureau has fully tapped its potential, quickly integrated into the surrounding tourism circle, and increased investment. It has developed the “Preliminary Plan for the Wugong Lake Scenic Area,” completed a 5-kilometer cement road at the scenic area entrance, built a 1,400-square-meter parking lot, nearly 10,000 square meters of leisure plaza, installed various landscape lighting fixtures, constructed a Wugong Lake viewing pavilion, and purchased or built eight water sports or sightseeing boats.

Within the scenic area, over 7,000 square meters of landscaping turf have been planted, along with nearly 1,000 precious trees. The area enjoys fast internet and mobile communication services, with office operations largely automated, and complete facilities for electricity and hospitality services. During every Golden Week, visitors flock in an endless stream for sightseeing and spring outings.

The Wugong Lake Scenic Area will become a hub for water sports, sightseeing, leisure vacations, and outdoor exploration, and is currently under development. The scenic area is interconnected with the renowned Wugong Mountain, Mount Mingyue, and the Hot Spring Resort, complementing each other’s strengths and enriching the local tourism offerings. The surging tides of Wugong, the majestic General Mountain—Wugong Lake is poised for takeoff while harboring tremendous business potential.
