Smart tourism gets an upgrade: Sun Moon Lake’s Youyou Smart Card offers land, water, and air access all in one card

The stunning scenery of Sun Moon Lake is a flagship tourist attraction in Taiwan and a must-visit destination for mainland Chinese tourists. To celebrate the centennial “Travel Taiwan $Feel the 100 Touching Moments,” the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has created “Taiwan’s first smart tourism service system for a scenic area.” Starting now, visitors only need to carry the “Greater Sun Moon Lake Youyou Smart Card” to ride various land, water, and air transportation options, and enjoy discounts included in the Sun Moon Lake sightseeing passport — offering unbeatable convenience and great deals.

Sun Moon Lake is a highly popular tourist destination among mainland Chinese visitors.

The Greater Sun Moon Lake Youyou Smart Card was launched on August 13, touting its powerful “one card, three uses” feature. Cardholders can explore all aspects of Sun Moon Lake — including land, water, and air — such as visiting the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, taking the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway, using the Shuishe-Ita Thao ferry for a single trip, riding the lakeside loop bus, and enjoying ultra-discounted rentals of Giant bicycles and electric scooters. Additionally, they can take advantage of special offers from shops in the Greater Sun Moon Lake area. The card also allows for stored-value rides using the “Taiwan Pass” transportation card, which can be used on buses in 11 counties and cities as well as trains between Ruifang and Hsinchu, ensuring smooth travel wherever you go.

In addition to the standard card, starting August 16, three limited-edition items — the “1439 Forever Together Happiness Pair Card,” the “739 Pray Together Card,” and the “199 Peace Blessing Card” — will also be available at designated outlets, allowing couples to travel happily and sweetly. The launch of the Greater Sun Moon Lake Youyou Smart Card marks the first step in elevating national travel experiences. In the future, the goal is for all citizens, regardless of the type of transportation card they hold, to enjoy a “seamless information flow and carefree, leisurely travel” experience in the Greater Sun Moon Lake area.
