Former Residence of Luo Longji

The former residence of Luo Longji is a cultural relic protection unit of Anfu County.

The former residence of Luo Longji is located in Chetian Village, Fengtian Town, Anfu County. Built in the late Qing Dynasty, the residence covers an area of over 200 square meters and features a typical Jiangnan-style folk courtyard. The courtyard faces a pond directly, with walls constructed from blue bricks. The battlements rise prominently with three at the front and four at the rear, while the inner rooms are all partitioned with wooden boards. On the window opening in the main hall that lets in light, there is preserved calligraphy reading “Literary Brilliance Pierces the Heavens” and other ink inscriptions, along with many poems and folk paintings under the front eaves. Luo Longji lived here from birth until the age of 12, and after returning from his studies in the United States, he visited his hometown three times to see his family. In 2002, after the former residence was listed as a key county-level cultural relic protection unit, the original residents were relocated, allowing for better preservation. In 2004, the county’s cultural and museum authorities carried out a comprehensive renovation of the residence, turning it into the Luo Longji Memorial Hall.

On the sixth day of the seventh lunar month in the 22nd year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1896), Luo Longji was born in Fengtian Town, Anfu County. When he was nine, his biological mother passed away. Influenced by his father from a young age, he developed a love for classical Chinese literature and poetry. Luo Longji was known for his exceptional intelligence from childhood and was regarded as a child prodigy.

In 1913, when Tsinghua College (Beijing’s preparatory school for students going to study in the United States) held a national entrance examination, Luo Longji ranked first in Jiangxi Province and was admitted to Tsinghua University. During the May Fourth Movement, he took on the role of a student leader, charging at the forefront of the protest movement and becoming a brave fighter of the May Fourth era.
