The Tomb of Mao Sui in Yongnian is a cultural heritage protection unit of Handan City.

The Tomb of Mao Sui is an ancient tomb from the Warring States period, located southwest of Guangfu City in Guangfu Town, Yongnian County. It is recognized as one of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units in Handan City.

The *Jize Cultural and Historical Materials* states that the Tomb of Mao Sui is located “southwest of the prefectural city,” which is Yongnian County. The *Yongnian County Annals* records: “Within the large embankment five li southwest of the city lies the Tomb of Mao Sui.” Legend has it that in the past, the tomb mound was grand and tall, and was listed as one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Pinggan” in Yongnian, known as “Mao Sui’s Summit.” During the Ming Dynasty, Shen Jiayun, a native of Yongnian who served as an Imperial Stable Official, wrote a poem upon visiting the Tomb of Mao Sui: “A sword lies across the steps—what valor still? The gallant swashbucklers of Pingyuan fade to nil. A bronze plate’s heat stirs fear in southern tribes, A cone of talent strengthens the Fuyang’s drifts. The tablet stands alone, weathered yet so proud, While busy mortals pass—none dare to endow. How oft I’ve paid my respects at this southern grave, Where wild trees gleam with rainbows o’er vines brave.” In front of the tomb once stood a memorial epitaph, which went missing during the chaos of the late Qing Dynasty after being stolen by salt police stationed in Yongnian City. Its whereabouts remain unknown.

After the liberation, a stone tablet still remained beside the tomb, inscribed with “Tomb of Mr. Mao Sui.” Unfortunately, the mound was later leveled and allocated as a private plot to a local farmer. This farmer, who admired Mao Sui’s virtue, secretly built a new mound on the original site. Later, government funds were allocated to rebuild the tomb mound and erect a new gravestone inscribed with “Tomb of Mao Sui.”
