Quannan County Tianlong Mountain Temple

Tianlong Mountain Temple is located in Shuwo Village, Jinlong Town, Quannan County, Jiangxi Province, 9 kilometers from the county seat. To get there, travel 7 kilometers northward toward Longnan from the county seat, then turn north at Wangjiangwei and go another 2 kilometers. The scenic area covers 1.5 square kilometers, with the main peak standing at an elevation of 441 meters. The temple complex includes the Mahavira Hall and Zhengjue Hall, which are active with incense offerings year-round. The entire mountain is situated amid a cluster of peaks shaped like lotus petals, with a steep summit, rugged rocks, and cliffs on three sides. A narrow path on the southwest side leads to the top. Viewed from afar, the sharp and majestic ridgeline resembles a dragon raising its head to take flight—hence the name “Tianlong Mountain” or “Heavenly Dragon Mountain.” Atop the mountain, aside from the Zhengjue Hall, there are also auxiliary structures such as the Guanyin Pavilion, the God of Wealth Temple, the Dragon Spring Pavilion, and the Tianyun Pavilion. Along the way, visitors can see natural landmarks like the Money-Shaking Tree, Tofu Rock, and Granny’s Coiffure Peak. Tianlong Mountain Temple has a long history, originally built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, over 400 years ago. With a legendary Buddhist cultural heritage, it has attracted notable figures throughout the ages who left inscriptions and stone carvings. The Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming once visited the mountain and composed the timeless verse: “Evergreen through the seasons, / A land of heroes and brilliance.” In 1940, Jiang Jingguo, then the head of the Gannan Administrative Office of the Kuomintang, climbed the mountain and was inspired to write: “Peaks upon peaks in layers, / Surrounded by white mist and rosy clouds.” In recent years, the temple has drawn large crowds of visitors, with the temple fair held on the eighth day of the Lunar New Year attracting over ten thousand people every year.
