Ruichang Wuyang Uprising Site

The Ruichang Wuyang Uprising Site is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Anzhi Uprising that took place on the evening of April 3, 1930, raised the first banner of armed struggle in the county. Members of the Wuyang uprising team also demanded action. However, as the uprising team still lacked weapons and ammunition, the timing was not yet ripe. At this very moment, the county party organization sent intelligence reporting that three cargo boats belonging to the notorious local merchant “Longyuan Trading” from the county town were to pass through Wuyang en route to Ruichang. The boats were loaded with oil, salt, and cloth purchased from Ganzhou, and were guarded by several armed servants.

That night, under the command of Yang Duwen, the uprising team was dispersed and lay in ambush along the riverbank outside Chenbu Village in Wuyang. By midnight, the three boats entered the ambush zone. Yang Duwen fired a shot into the air as the signal to act. Hundreds of local farmers from both riverbanks shouted and rushed toward the cargo boats, killing and injuring the guards, and transporting the oil, salt, and cloth among other spoils back to Wuyang.

In this battle, the uprising team acquired four long-barreled firearms and one short-barreled firearm. Later, they traded the seized goods for more than a dozen additional long-barreled firearms.

On April 28, 1930, the main force of the Wuyang Uprising Team, consisting of over 200 members, led by Captain Yang Duwen and Party Representative Yang Shiyi, launched a surprise attack on Wuyang Market. Two local tyrants who had incurred great public outrage were executed, while the other captured landlords and evil gentry were paraded through the streets wearing tall paper hats. The crowd cheered with delight.

Subsequently, the Wuyang Township held a founding meeting for the Peasants’ Association and distributed the wealth seized from the tyrants to impoverished farmers.
