Former Site of the General Political Department of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army

The Former Site of the General Political Department of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army is located at Baiwu Zi, Shazhoubazhen Village, Shazhouba Town, Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province. Originally the ancestral hall of the Yang family, it was built during the Xianfeng reign of the Qing Dynasty. The structure faces southeast and is situated northwest, originally built with earth and wood, later modified to brick and wood construction. It features a small blue-tiled roof, a flush-gable roof style, a layout of two courtyards, one main hall, and two wings, with a width of three bays and covering an area of 216 square meters.

After the establishment of the Central Revolutionary Military Commission (CRMC) of the Chinese Soviet Republic in November 1931, the General Political Department of the CRMC was formed. In January 1932, it was renamed the General Political Department of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, becoming the highest political authority overseeing both the national Red Army and local forces. It reported directly to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Provisional Central Government, alongside the CRMC. Internal departments included Organization, Propaganda, Mobilization, Enemy Work, Youth, and the Red Star newspaper. Key personnel who worked and resided here included Political Commissar of the Red Army Wang Jiaxiang, Deputy Commissars He Chang and Yang Shangkun, Acting Commissar Gu Zuolin, Secretary-General Xiao Xiangrong, and Deng Xiaoping, editor of the Red Star newspaper. In July 1934, the department relocated to Yanbei Village, Yunshi Mountain, Ruijin. In 2006, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
