Martyrs' Cemetery of Mao Zetan

The martyrs' tomb of Comrade Mao Zetan is located in Zhangwuping, Honglin Village, Zetan Township, Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province. Facing northwest and situated southeast, the tomb is built with a brick-concrete structure. Its gate has three bays, and the top is covered with piled yellow earth, covering an area of 43.7 square meters.

After the main force of the Red Army began the Long March in October 1934, Comrade Mao Zetan stayed behind to carry out guerrilla warfare along the Fujian–Jiangxi border. He served as a member of the Central Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Area and as commander of the Independent Division of the Red Army. On April 25, 1935, the Independent Division led by Mao Zetan was scattered, and he led some guerrilla fighters through mountains and valleys, breaking through enemy lines to the remote mountains of "Honglin" in Huangshankou, Ruijin County. On April 26, he was surrounded by Nationalist troops in Huanggouwo Paper Mill at Huangtiankeng, Honglin Village, Anzhi Township, Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province. To cover his comrades, he sacrificed himself heroically. After Mao Zetan's death, bandits from the Nationalist security forces carried his body to Baiwuzi in Huangshankou, Honglin Village. They cruelly severed his head with bayonets and discarded his body in the bushes. That night, local underground Party members and residents secretly buried Comrade Mao Zetan’s remains at Zhangwuping.
