The former site of the Investigation and Statistics Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Republic is located in Yangwu Village, Shazhoubay, Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province.

In April 1933, proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation including Mao Zedong, with the aim of strengthening the red political power, added an important leadership body—the Department of National Economic Affairs—on the basis of the existing organizational structure of the Soviet government, and established within the department its principal agency—the Investigation and Statistics Bureau, which is the predecessor of the National Bureau of Statistics. To commemorate the great achievements of the older generation of investigation and statistics workers, promote the statistical spirit of the Soviet Area, enhance the standards of statistical work, and meet the new requirements set by the Party Central Committee and the State Council leadership for statistical work, the National Bureau of Statistics decided to restore the former site of the Investigation and Statistics Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Republic by the end of 2003.

The Communist Party of China established the largest rural revolutionary base in the country—the Central Revolutionary Base—in southern Jiangxi, and created within this base the first nationwide red political power in Chinese history—the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic. After the establishment of the Soviet government, great importance was attached to the field of statistics. Comrade Mao Zedong put forward the famous assertion during his time in the Soviet Area: “No investigation, no right to speak.”

The statistical agencies within the Soviet government became indispensable functional departments, carrying out a great deal of highly effective work in armed struggle and economic construction. They pioneered the statistical work of people’s governments and accumulated valuable experience for the development of statistical systems in New China.

The former site of the Investigation and Statistics Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Republic has become a base for the statistical system to carry out education on revolutionary traditions. It aims to inherit and carry forward the glorious traditions and fine work styles of statistical work in the Chinese Soviet Republic, to learn from the dedication of our predecessors generation after generation, to emulate their spirit of going deep into reality to conduct investigations and research, to keep pace with the times, to work diligently, to forge ahead with innovation, and to make new contributions to building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
