Former Site of the General Consumer Cooperative of the Chinese Soviet Republic

The Central Soviet Area Consumer Cooperative was established on December 5, 1933, when the First Congress of the Central Soviet Area Consumer Cooperatives was held in Yeping, Ruijin. At the congress, Comrade Xu Changshan was elected as the director of the General Cooperative. After its establishment, cooperatives at all levels actively mobilized the masses to participate in the economic development of the Soviet area and supported the revolutionary war. By February 1934, the Central Soviet Area had developed a total of 1,140 consumer cooperatives at various levels, with 295,993 members and share capital of 322,525 yuan. There were two provincial-level general consumer cooperatives in Jiangxi and Fujian, and seventeen county-level general consumer cooperatives. In terms of cooperative organization and leadership, a hierarchical leadership system from the central level down to districts and townships was established.

The former site of the General Consumer Cooperative of the Chinese Soviet Republic was originally located at the Guan Di Temple near the Yunlong Bridge in Ruijin County. Due to the temple’s long-term disrepair and urban redevelopment plans, it was reconstructed within the Shazhouba Revolutionary Site Complex, replicating the original appearance of the General Consumer Cooperative. The reconstruction was approved and funded by the All-China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives in September 2000, designed by the Jiangxi Provincial Supply and Marketing Cooperative, and implemented by the Ruijin Municipal Supply and Marketing Cooperative. It was completed in October 2001. The site covers an area of 442.6 m².
